RE: Anybody remember the "Goat Man?"

Folks, the Goat Man was not just a rumor, but a real live person, and just as alive as his many goats. My wife claims she saw him from the school house window in Washington, N.C. around 1957-59. :)

Anybody remember the "Goat Man?"

I recall seeing the goat man once in rural N.C. in the 1950's when he drove by our house in a beat up old wagon pulled by several goats. He was as dirty and smelly as the goats, and his wagon made a terrible noise with attached pots and pans banging about. He was quite the celebrity, with everybody talking about him as he passed through the area.
Did anyone else see him?

RE: Motorcycling dangerous?

Wow guys! Thanks very much for the thoughtful responses. I am still torn about the issue, but for now I guess I'll use what little common sense I have and forgo the bike. Darn! I do have to think about my family as well as myself.
I actually had a Yamaha 350 CC back in the early 1960's. I used it off-road nearly everyday after college classes. It was great fun riding on logging trails, or transporting coeds.
Thanks again for your wisdom. :)

Motorcycling dangerous?

I would love to buy a 250cc motorcycle to putter around town and ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I am 63, fairly well coordinated, and very careful and cautious in my driving. However, I certainly don't want to be killed or seriously injured during my retirement years. I have read that motorcyclists are 20 times more likely to be injured than auto drivers.
Of course, I would take a motorcycle safety course first, and always wear a helment. I would also avoid heavily traveled roads.
What do you guys think? Should I go for it, or let my better judgment win out again?

RE: Ocracoke, NC NPS campground

Good to hear there is a little more time left at Ocracoke. If the weather is decent, it is a beautiful time to be at the OBX. We have stayed there in a Casita 17 just behind the dunes and had a great time. :)

You might check to see if this campground is still open for the season. I recall it closes early.

RE: Grandfather Campground, Boone NC

We much prefer Julian Price on the parkway, which is much cooler and more scenic. Good eats and shopping are nearby in Blowing Rock.

RE: Blue Ridge Parkway

Some of my favorites:
Julian Price Lake, a campground right on the parkway. Visit nearby Blowing Rock for eats and shopping.
See Linville Gorge and stay at the nearby campground.
Black Mountain, a forest service campground a few miles off the parkway but very nice and secluded. Has a great swimming hole on the river.
Mount Pisgah is very cool at 4500 ft. It has a nice restaurant with view.
In the Smokies, there are wonderful campgrounds at Smokemont and Cades Cove. A must do is drive or cycle the 11 mile loop around the valley.
Finally, if you get that far, Standing Indian near Franklin is fantastic if you like cool air, large spaces, fishing, and having a river running through your campground. Nearby there is ruby mining for those so inclined.

RE: High mpg cars for sell in Europe

About learning to operate diesels, I bet the public would adapt quickly since saving money is involved. I remember years ago when they said the public would not pump their own gas--they were wrong.

RE: High mpg cars for sell in Europe

The way I see it, the best approach is to have a super mini like described in the link, and to have a regular truck to haul and pull campers. You would use each vehicle as the need arises.

RE: Another great article on oil prices

D&M wrote:
"Once again the law of unintentional consequences causes fluctuations in the world's economy. Hedge speculation is something that is needed by all commodities. There is nothing illegal, tricky or unscrupulous about it. Unfortunately, someone found out that if enough people do it they can actually drive the price. They learned this lesson back in the dot.com years. They honed it to a point in the real estate market.
The index speculation could be controlled by requiring the speculator to take delivery of the commodity that they buy the contract on, but what would be the consequence of that move?
Government intervention is not the answer my friends. Politicians make laws, not by logic, but by knee jerk reactions to a situation that is upsetting the voter. A group that by and large is not able to fathom all of the reactions that a move like this would make. Thes pols create a law, usually one that has minimum impact on themselves, and then rush on to another "crisis". instead of concentrating on the things that they are supposed to, like the stuff in that pesky Constitution."
In my opinon the above is one of the best posts I have ever read on the Trailer Forum. Congrats D&M!

RE: Court quashes dad's grounding of 12-year-old daughter

The judge should have said at the outset that she had no jurisdiction in the case and so could not make a determination. The fact that she intruded into this situation is a real shame, and indicative of the harmful trend of anti-family legislation and rulings. In short, the authority of parents is being replaced by the state.

I don't know of anything around Louisburg. He might try Nutbush campground on Kerr Lake, or Holly Point on Jordan Lake. I don't know if there are camping spots on Bunn Lake or not. Perhaps someone else will know.
